What is UV?
UV is an acronym for ultraviolet light. There are three types of light:
- Ultraviolet
- Visible Light
- Infrared (thermal) light
How are UV lights used?
UV has proved to be beneficial in the medical field. UV lights have provided treatment against germs since the early 1900s. In 1903, a man named Niels Finsen won a Nobel Prize in Medicine for treating Tuberculosis (TB) with UV.
Did you know that the sun plays a role in cleaning the air we breathe outside? Ultraviolet light rays are the same light rays that the sun uses to treat and purify the outdoor air we breathe.
Have you noticed that when you visit a hospital, the lighting is different than that in your home? That is due to the UV lights they use to help destroy microbes and limit bacterial growth!
What does a UV air purifier treat in my home?
Installing a UV air purifier to your HVAC system is the easiest way to get clean air! This will provide purified air through your entire home or office building. UV treated air kills microbes by damaging their DNA. It also sterilizes the air let out through the HVAC system.
Without natural UV purification by the sun, our indoor air builds up odors, toxins, and gasses. Additionally, volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, build up. Adding a UV air purifier to your home or commercial HVAC will cut these toxins from the air you breathe!
Some of the most common air contaminants in the home or office building include:
- Aerosols: air fresheners, perfumes or colognes, hair sprays
- Cooking Odors
- Smoke
- Cleaning Chemicals
- Pesticides
- Off-gassing from: paint, stain, furnishing, and other building materials.
Treating the air with UV sterilization will kill these indoor VOCs. It also kills other contaminants such as bacteria, mold spores, fungi, and mildew. Mold is a common problem here in Fort Myers and Southwest Florida due to the humidity.
This is another reason why adding a UV sterilization unit to your HVAC is a great idea! It could also prevent you from having a mold event that requires professional help.
How does UV sterilization work?
The process is simple and the results are fast. When Chill Squad installs a UV Air Purification System it gets to work immediately! It kills and controls germs immediately. Also, it removes any odorous gasses in your indoor environment.
Bacteria, gasses, and microbes move through the duct system and pass by the UV light given off by the bulbs. The bulbs sterilize the germs and gasses and neutralize the toxins in the vent. This allows only purified air to flow through the rest of the building’s duct system. Viola! Clean and Pure Air!
Research results
UV lights are conventional in hospital environments. In 2012 Duke University Medical Center discovered something very beneficial. They found that UV hospital lights eliminated 97% of drug-resistant bacteria. They concluded this by testing a total of 50 different hospital rooms.
A study by the Journal of Applied and Environmental Microbiology reports is impressive. They found that UV lights added to commercial HVAC systems lower fungal levels.
This result developed after only four months of the installation. The scientific evidence supporting UV purification continues growing as time passes.
Health benefits of UV air purifiers
Indoor air quality in homes is improving due to the growing number of UV Air Purifiers in homes. Having a UV Air Purifier in your HVAC limits your exposure to microbes, mold, viruses, and bacteria. This results in fewer respiratory flare-ups.
It also results in residents being less prone to catching colds or getting the flu. Another benefit to those in Southwest Florida is how well UV air purifiers kill mold. Resulting in less mold-related illnesses!
With better air quality, children miss fewer days of school due to health issues. Those who have chronic illnesses like COPD or asthma report having fewer flare-ups. This is due to the neutralization of VOCs that irritate the throat and lungs.
UV Air Purifiers Save You Money
Installing a UV air purifier not only keeps the air healthier, but it also helps reduce your HVAC costs. That is a win-win! UV lights allow your AC unit to run more effectively and efficiently.
It assists in keeping your costs lowered for the appliance. Yet, it also keeps health bills down since you won’t have as many air-borne viruses floating around.
